Session 1 (Hours 1 and 2). Land based. Winds 5 to 12 mph.

Selection of flying areas, associated hazards and risk assessment of area to be used.

Introduction to Power kites and the setting up and checking of equipment.

Wind assessment techniques.

The safety systems of the equipment being used.

General principles of kite aerodynamics.

Phrases and terminology.

First flights.

Operation of safety systems.

Launching and landing.

Flying exercises.

Introduction to a harness.

Harness exercises.

Introduction to Four line kites.

Setting up and equipment checks safety system operation.

First flight of 4 line kite.

 

Session 2 (Hours 3 and 4) Water based. Winds 5 to 15 mph. Water up to 3 foot deep

Selection of flying areas, associated hazards and risk assessment of area to be used.

Wind assessment and kite selection

Safety system set up and checks.

Flight of 4 line kite and first harness operation with 4 line kite.

Water re-launching demonstration and exercises.

More advanced kite flying.

4 line kite flying exercises.

First body drags.

Power requirements with body drags and more advances flying techniques.

Up wind body dragging.

Emergency drills and practice.

 

Session 3 (Hours 5 and 6) Winds 8 to 15 mph. Water up to 4 foot deep.

Introduction of Kite board and board handling.

Advanced techniques for kite handling when handling boards

Safety aspects when handling boards when flying kite.

Placing feet into straps.

Manoeuvring the kite with board on feet.

Emergency drills when losing control of kite with board on feet or foot.

Emergency retrieval of downed kite

Emergency pack down of kite and self rescue techniques.

Introduction to kite repairs and problems.

Line care and bar maintenance.

 

Session 4 (Hours 7 and 8) Winds 8 to 15 mph. Water up to 5 foot deep. (Using own equipment if bought for familiarization)

Recap on all previous techniques.

Demonstration of self launch techniques from beach or grass.

First attempts at getting up on the board.

Techniques and body positions,

Kite control and exercises.

First rides and falls,

Short question and answer session on points learned and safety aspects of the sport.

Course complete.

Issue of Kiteboarder card.
